Sensemaking: the missing activation barrier in transdisciplinary collaborations

🔮 I keep coming across a recurring pattern in academic, research, and public engagement spaces: you gather a room full of bright and capable people — experts who know their fields thoroughly, care about the work deeply, and have a zeal for catalysing real change.
✨ The conversations buzz. There’s energy. Ideas flow freely. And yet, somehow, this collective expertise still doesn’t translate into real solutions or constructive action.
đź’¬ New meetings keep happening. The same questions are raised in new ways. And overlapping permutations of ideas pop up yet again. While individual insights brim, consensus, collective action, and a coherent path ahead remain elusive.
🗺️ There’s often lots of activity, but no shared direction, no clear next steps, and no sense of shared momentum. And then inevitably, the efforts start to fade out slowly.
👾 It's deeply frustrating to me that we are unable to build on existing efforts, despite everyone agreeing on the need for doing more, and often urgently so.
🎯 For years, I thought this was a function of missing expertise, funding, or clearly articulated metrics. But now I see it differently.
⚜️ The missing activation barrier is almost always a question of process: rarely dow we create or hold space for collective sensemaking. Few acknowledge the role of facilitation and knowledge brokering, let alone implement it.
🎲 Process design rarely seems to receive the attention it deserves in such transdisciplinary collaborations.
🌱 But for me, sensemaking and facilitation aren’t just buzzwords or corporate lingo. They are the intentional and rooted work of asking deeper reflective questions.
💠What do we 'know' right now? Who carries that knowledge? Who benefits? What’s at stake? How is each perspective partial? And how can we combine our incomplete knowledges to create more holistic and emergent solutions?
🤝🏾 When a group answers these coherently — not just circles around them — the collective dynamic shifts. Mutual respect deepens. Epistemic humility surfaces. And expertise meets constraints in productive and realistic ways.
🧩 This is precisely how fragmented knowledges start to fit together, adjust iteratively, and move towards emergent solutions. But only when it’s done intentionally, allowing expertise in the room to meet, permeate, and grow together.
♻️ Process design, facilitation, and sensemaking make this transformation and translation not just possible, but also explicit and visible.
